1, 2001 I set out on my '97 Suzuki Bandit 1200 for a little fresh air.
With no particular route in mind, I decided my destination would be the
windmill over in Holland Twp, Hunterdon County. My son enjoys watching
the PBS show Thomas The Train and there's a windmill at the start of the
show. I wanted to check it out on my own before bringing him to see it.
I remembered seeing signs for it off Rt 519 but never went there.
Unfortunately a couple of bad storms over the past few years have destroyed
3 of the 4 sails. (photo on left) While I was there the groundskeeper
told me it was okay to take a look around, but the building is now closed
to the public. From
Milford, NJ head North on Rt 519 and look for the Windmill Deli on the
left ... a good stop for sandwiches ... then left on Church Rd (follow
the little wooden signs for 'windmill'), right on Shire Rd, left on Adamic
Hill Rd and you'll see the windmill after a mile or so on the right. A
small gravel parking lot is across the street, though there's not a whole
lot to see anymore.
Continue
on Adamic Hill Rd to end and make a left on Alfalfa Hill Rd then a right
back onto Church Rd to get to Phillips
Farmstand for some fresh fruit. They also have a huge pick-your-own
fruit business but I'm not sure you would want to take your motorcycle
up there, that's on Crabapple Rd.
Instead you could continue on Church Rd to Rt 627 North and go over
the Delaware at the Reigelsville bridge and back down on Route 611 on
the PA side to Route 32 to Upper Black Eddy then over the bridge to Milford
again.
Lots of great riding in the area.
The Holland Twp web site shows a photo
of the windmill before it was broken.
